Capital city Taiwan is home to over 2.7 million people, with around a third of Taiwanese residents living in the Taipei-Keelung metropolitan area that includes the cities of New Taipei and Keelung. Vvisit the National Palace Museum, National Taiwan Museum, Ximending district and iconic skyscraper Taipei 101 – Taiwan’s highest building – which used to be the Taiwan Financial Centre and is now home to Taipei 101 Mall, where you can shop for designer brands and enjoy fine dining. Buy a ticket to the top-floor observation deck for a stunning view of the city. In the evening, soak up the atmosphere and try local food at the lively night markets.

In Taipei you can sample some of the world’s finest Japanese, Taiwanese and Chinese cuisine. Michelin launches its first-ever guide to Taipei in 2018, putting the city firmly on the foodie map. For unbeatable views of the city, head to Shin Yeh on the 85th floor of Taipei 101 – a grand restaurant serving delicious seafood. For kaiseki – a Japanese delicacy consisting of small, elaborate plates of food served consecutively – head to RyuGin Taipei, which is headed up by Michelin-starred chef Seiji Yamamoto. A trip to Taiwan wouldn’t be complete without experiencing a traditional Taiwanese tea service and Eighty-Eightea Ribansyo serves an impressive tea selection with Japanese-style interiors and gardens.

Taiwan's third-largest city, Taichung, is an educational and cultural centre that’s home to the National Museum of Natural Sciences, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts and National Taichung University of Education. The city has buzzing nightlife, with some great cocktail bars such as Moonlight Sky Bar at the top of the Millennium Hotel Taichung skyscraper. Jingming 1st Street is an upmarket boulevard for designer shopping and there are also the Botanical Gardens to explore.

Kaohsiung is a bustling port city on the island’s southern tip, home to impressive skyscrapers, like Sky Tower, and parks. Visit Lihue Night Market, Love River and the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas. Another city is Tainan, on the southwest coast, from where you can visit the beautiful Guanziling Hot Springs and Taijiang National Park. Another top national park to visit is Yangmingshan National Park, in northern Taiwan, where there are waterfalls and the Tatun Volcano Group, in addition to the highest concentration of hot springs in Taiwan.

Taiwan’s top beach destinations include Kenting National Park, Green Island off the southeast coast and Jibei Island off the west coast. Both islands boast tropical beaches and are the perfect escape from the frenetic mainland. Chaojih Hot Springs on Green Island is one of only three natural saltwater hot springs in the world, where visitors can relax in bubbling pools whilst looking out over the ocean.
