Made up of 21 Mediterranean islands between Sicily and Tunisia, the Republic of Malta is perfectly positioned for sun-drenched beach holidays and fresh Mediterranean cuisine. In addition to its sandy beaches visitors can explore the impressive Megalithic Temples of Malta, which were built between 3,600 BC and 700 BC. Valletta, the Maltese capital, has been crowned the European Capital of Culture for 2018 – and with sites like St. John’s Cathedral, a stunning example of Baroque architecture, and City Gate, built in 2011 by Italian architect Renzo Piano, it certainly lives up to its name. Stroll through the sun-soaked Grand Harbour and dine at The Harbour Club, which offers wonderful views across the water to ‘The Three Cities’ of Birgu, Senglea and Cospicua – fortified cities which date back to the Middle Ages, 16th and 17th centuries respectively.

The breathtaking island of Gozo features over 40 km of coastline – Ramla Bay in particular is considered one of Malta’s best sandy beaches. While here, visitors can explore rural hiking paths and go scuba diving in the Blue Hole, a stunning natural rock formation carved out by wind and waves. Ggantija is the island’s most famous attraction, with its impressive limestone tombs and Neolithic temple ruins dating back to 3,600 BC.

The island of Malta boasts more beautiful beaches, such as Mellieha Bay on the east coast and Golden Bay on the west coast. Old capital Mdina’s narrow streets date back to 700 BC and are dotted with fascinating sights including the citadel, St Paul’s Cathedral and the Metropolitan Cathedral.

Malta hosts a myriad of traditional festivals such as the February carnival, along with Annie Mac’s Lost & Found Festival in Valletta which features electronic music and world-class DJs. For culture vultures, the Malta International Arts Festival takes place each year from June to July and Notte Bianca is a lively night-time arts festival held annually in October.
