Private jet charter to Marrakech

Marrakech is demanding, but so rewarding. Embrace the heat, bear with the vendors peddling their wares and let the city sweep you away. The souks, the square, the mosques, Marrakech is a photographers dream, with so much movement, colour and Berber architecture. Hidden alleys, cool courtyards and quirky cafes serving the ubiquitous mint tea are all to be found, if you relax, go with the flow and enjoy the city for what it is, loud, bustling and unapologetic. When you head into Marrakech you’ll probably be drawn to the towering minaret of the Koutoubia Mosque first. Whilst you cannot enter unless you’re Muslim, it’s still well worth going to see it, and taking a few pictures. Wandering through the souks, and heading towards Jmaa el Fna is also a must do, just to soak up a bit of everyday life. The square itself comes alive at night, with snake charmers, dancers, musicians and a plethora of stands and shops selling everything from souvenirs to orange juice, and Moroccan mint tea to earthenware tagines. If you have time, there are a nice selection of museums, palace and gardens to visit, some of our favourites include the Majorelle Gardens, the Bahia Palace and the Museum of Photography and Visual Arts. For a treat, indulge in a traditional hammam and gommage, a sauna like experience followed by a full body scrub, popular with both locals and visitors alike.

Shopping in Marrakech is quite the experience. Say goodbye to fixed prices and air-conditioned shopping centres, this is the realm of the souk. Here, within the labyrinthine streets and alleys you’ll find tiny shops selling all manner of goods, from tagines and brightly coloured pottery, to textiles, spices, jewellery and a whole host of trinkets and other collectables. Haggling is the order of the day, and it’s safe to say that the first price you’re quoted will be well and above the worth of the item. Don’t be tempted to simply walk away, for the vendors; haggling is all part of the experience, a game where they lose if you don’t play. They’ll cajole and try to sweet talk you, but stick to your guns and if it comes to it, do walk away as they often come after you. Make sure you check out a range of streets as some are in specialist areas, and therefore are good for a certain product such as spices, leather or jewellery. Even the shops selling similar things are worth browsing as you may find a similar version of something that suits you better, so do explore before you part with your hard earnt cash.

In between your shopping and sightseeing, you’ll want to grab a bite or two to eat. One of our favourite spots it Le Jardin, hidden within a courtyard it is a peaceful space hidden close to the main square and offers classical Moroccan style, with some retro 1960’s décor. The food is outstanding and well-priced offering an array of brochettes and tagines. But watch your feet, the resident tortoise, Charlotte, roams the courtyard, much to the delight of the patrons. For something hip and happening, Nomad is the current hot-spot, offering a combination of chic décor, great traditional meals and plenty of atmosphere. For something offering a contemporary twist on local favourites, try the Gastro MK, their tasting menu is said to be the best in the city.

We recommend spending at least a couple of nights in one of the riads in the heart of the city. These buildings are usually a little nondescript from the outside, but once you step inside you’re transported to another place. In general all the rooms are located around the edges, overlooking a central courtyard where you’ll often find either a pool, or if it’s a smaller riad, a water feature. There are generally a few seating areas to be found as well, which are ideal for enjoying the cooler temperatures found within these courtyards. You’ll be able to hear the call to prayer as you would anywhere in the city, but the rest of the city noise seemingly vanishes the minute you step inside. Riads come in a range of sizes, but a few of our favourite luxury ones close to the main square include Riad Joya and Dar Al Assad, whilst La Sultana, and Villa des Orangers are further away.
