Ontario’s 1,838-square-mile playground comprises over 1,600 bodies of water, the largest of which are Lakes Muskoka, Rosseau and Joseph. Days here are spent on boats, kayaks, canoes and paddle-boards – or just relaxing on the shore and taking pleasure in simple things like the thick forest’s reflection on the lake’s surface. This is somewhere people come to unwind and enjoy a slower pace of life.

Driving north along Highway 11 from Toronto, the first town you’ll reach is Gravenhurst at the southern tip of Lake Muskoka. This former lumber town’s historic Muskoka Wharf has been lovingly restored into a bustling waterfront hub where people come to dine, shop and hop aboard the steamships that transport tourists up and down the lake. For those interested in local history and all things nautical, a ride on the Royal Mail Ship RMS Segwun, which has plied these waters for over 130 years, is a must.

The shores of Muskoka’s many lakes are lined with “cottages” – palatial grand mansions built by captains of Canadian industry in the early 20th Century. Later, an influx of film stars and sporting heroes turned the area into the Canadian equivalent of the Hamptons or Malibu. The best way to experience life in the glamorous “Cottage Country” is by renting out a property for a week or two. Failing that, glimpse some of Lake Muskoka’s grandest properties and their sprawling grounds on a steamship cruise along Millionaire’s Row.

While Gravenhurst is dubbed the gateway to the lakes, pretty Port Carling is considered their heart. Sitting on the section of the Indian River that connects Lakes Muskoka and Rosseau, this is a great spot to base yourself if you want easy access to all three of the biggest lakes, many of the smaller ones and Lake Huron’s (one of the Great Lakes of North America) beautiful Georgian Bay.

The western town of Huntsville is a starting point for adventures in Canada’s oldest provincial park, Algonquin. Much like Muskoka, the park is made up of a vast network of waterways, but has much more of a wilderness feel despite its million annual visitors. Wildlife lovers can look out for plenty of bird, mammal and reptile species, while the park’s signature adventure is a canoeing expedition – with over 2,000 km of routes, trips can last anything from a few hours to a few weeks. During the winter months, the focus changes from water to snow and ice, with activities such as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, dog sledding and ice fishing. Adjacent to the park is the stunning Lake of Bays, whose shoreline features a network of bays, islands and peninsulas that create narrow hidden waterways.

As you’d expect from such a popular vacation destination, Muskoka boasts a fantastic range of accommodation. We highly recommend renting a cottage for a true Muskoka experience, however there are also plenty of fantastic hotels and resorts. Wherever you stay, chances are you’ll be just a stone’s throw from the water’s edge.

Muskoka’s nearest international airport is Toontactronto Pearson Airport. There’s also a small airfield just to the north of Gravenhurst that can accommodate small aircraft. Simply contact our team and we’ll arrange everything you need to charter a private jet to Muskoka.
